It’s like a Create Your Own Adventure story! Just pick your fave option, combine, and voila! You’ll have the plot to your very own Dance Movie.
Meet the Girl. The girl is Different than other girls, because she [just had a terrible break-up and no one had broken up with anyone before ever/ just had a family member pass away/ is artistic and HAS BIG DREAMS, OK?]
The Girl also likes to dance, and she is the only [ballerina in a world of street dancers/ the only street dancer in a world full of classically trained dancers.]
(This is also why she’s Different.)
The Girl meets the Boy in preparation for the [Big Show/ Big Audition/ Chance to Prove Themselves], and there is Tension. Most likely because [they just broke up/ both want to be the Star/ are from different sides of the street.]
The Girl is not initially accepted because she’s [Different/ inexperienced/ white/ black/ too trained/ not trained enough/ a fantastically bad actress] — but, hey, Mr. [Choreographer/Director/Judge]! She’s got heart! After an impromptu dance exhibition in a public place where no one seems to care if she destroys some or all of the nearby props, and no one eating at that table seems to mind the Girl stomping on their table top — the Girl is accepted into the dance [troupe/school/crew].
After a Dance! Montage! in which every one shows off their Best Moves (but not their actual Best Moves, because we’ll save those for the end of the movie), the [Crew/ Corps/ Group of Feisty Newcomers] has some Initial Success! They [win the street style battle in the club/ are accepted into the competition/ get a brief and fleeting moment of praise from the Strict Director].
Suddenly, the Boy and the Girl have an Attraction, and No One Saw that Coming, no matter how artfully articulated their Meet-Cute was. The two of them wander off for an Impromptu Date [on the roof/ in an abandoned warehouse/ on the Ferris Wheel/ in a dark and private corner at this cool dance club]. This will somehow turn into Symbolic Dancing, and possibly also Rain, and will naturally — but not predictably! — lead to the First Kiss.
But oh no, it’s time for the Conflict! Someone — hopefully from a rival dance group — will let slip a Vital Piece of Information that someone has been hiding the entire time. The night before the Big Day, the Girl and the Boy will get into a Fight, because [he lied about his past/ she lied about her past/ some tiny piece of information was misunderstood/ someone was TRICKED into kissing a third person but it’s NOT WHAT IT SEEMS] and now neither of them can trust the other.
It’s all a Big Misunderstanding.
Everyone knows, if the lead Girl and the lead Boy can’t get along — because let’s face it, one of them is going to stomp off to [their VW van/ their motorcycle/ the airport] and insist they are Never Coming Back — then the rest of the dancers can’t perform!
“Man, how are we gonna [do the Big Show/ Make it at the Big Audition/ Win the Big Competition] without our leaders?!”
Luckily, Someone is around to give a Big, Inspiring, Speech! Just when the audience thinks All is Lost for our underdog, ragtag group of dancers, a [mom/ best friend/ former mentor/ previously withdrawn and unemotional character who has a Sudden Change of Heart] will appear! He/she will give an Inspiring Speech, reminding everyone What’s Really Important: [dance!/ love!/ the love of dance!/ friendship!/ sharing the love of dance through friendship!]
Whoever left comes crawling back, Apologies are attempted but there’s No Time! The [show/competition/audition] is about to start! The entire dance group agrees it’s time to [Just Do It/ Dance It Out/ Show the World What We’re Made Of!] and gets ready to perform as a unified, stronger, tighter group!
The climax of the movie is, of course — regardless of any other selection you’ve made thus far — a SIGNIFICANT penultimate dance sequence that in no way recounts and symbolizes the Plot of the Entire movie thus far; through the theatre, magic, and storytelling of the dance discipline! Funny how the Girl and the Guy dance together, and then apart, and then have an emotional, sensual [pas de deux/ stunt sequence/ trust fall] together before the entire group comes out to do the Big Epic Finale!
(And, you know, show off their Actual Best Dance Moves.)
After the dance is over, and the group has won — naturally — now there is time for Apologies. Luckily, after flying high on the endorphins of an Epic Dance Performance and [an Epic Win/ an Epic Acceptance into the Big Dance School/ grudging respect from a family member who previously just Didn’t Understand] — no apologies are needed!
There will be a second, lengthier kiss between the Girl and the Boy, which will culminate in the camera doing a series of 360 orbits around the couple, until all of their friends, family and supporters notice, and start cheering, until the couple breaks apart and grins, and the Heart Warming Theme Song swells as the film freezes on a final frame of the Girl, smiling wildly while surrounded by her adoring supporters!
All is forgiven, all walks of life are joined together, all culture are appreciated, dance unifies and saves lives, the end!
Congratulations, you’ve outlined your first Dance Movie! Scroll back to the top, start all over again, and you’re on your way to a blockbuster series!
