Til Death Do Us Parker.

Another opportunity to document the life of one of my favourite families!

I unofficially snapped some pictures at Emily the Sister’s bridal shower a few weeks ago, and as I expected, the time flew and her wedding day arrived!

I’ve known Emily almost as long as I’ve known her brother Travis, and I’ve known her fiance-now-husband Richard since my college days. Sometimes, two people who were both in your life but in completely different ways end up coming together — and as I told Emily yesterday, I’m so happy two people I love found love together, and doubled up the love in my life.

Emily had asked if I would mind coming to take some pictures of her and her girls getting ready, and then after, Richard and his guys, and of course, I agreed! Any opportunity to get some practice in is welcome, and I felt honored to get to watch Emily get ready, spend the morning with her. She and her girls got ready in Paducah Bed and Breakfast, which was a beautiful place to explore, full of high ceilings and antique furniture. Richard and his guys got ready at Emily and Travis’ dad’s house — which he had just decorated for Halloween — quite impressively, I might add. The spooky setting made quite the entertaining back-drop for their getting ready pictures.

Biggest lesson learned this time around? Battery back-up! Battery life was not really something I’ve had to worry about much — I seldom shoot for much longer than an hour, maybe two. And if I do — I’m shutting the camera off for long spells in between. Luckily — the camera battery lasted all day long, through Emily and the girls’ pictures, through Richard and the guys — what I had agreed to cover in a more formal photography sense. I didn’t even think about charging the camera after I picked up Shaun from work, had a shower, started to get ready. So — we got to the ceremony sight, I manged to snap a few of my dance company girls and myself, our dear friends Dawn and Barb, a few of the beginning of the ceremony and then —battery exhausted.

In all honesty, it was kind of nice. I’d been snapping pictures for several hours at that point, I’d worked at seven AM, and had run all over town getting lunch for the girls, picking up Shaun, getting ready. I regret not getting more pictures of Emily and Richard at the ceremony and reception, or of sweet Jack and Nae, killin’ on the dance floor with Teegan, or any of Shaun and Jack’s amazing dance moves…but I really got to enjoy being a guest at the wedding, and not a documentarian. Emily had an amazing photographer to cover the event, and for once, I wasn’t worried about trying to wait for the right moment to snap a picture. I just got down and boogied, cheered loud for the couple, and had a great time.

Congratulations, Richard and Emily!

SuhWeeks Wedding Extravaganza!

In honor of our second wedding anniversary, I’m reposting some of the journaling I did in the days directly following out wedding. Below are my immediate impressions and memories from our incredible wedding day — despite any stress or worry I felt in the days leading up to the actual ceremony (including our dear, sweet eldery pug passing the night before our rehearsal dinner) — the day of our wedding was a beautiful, perfect day and I love rereading this, looking at the pictures, and remembering how deeply loved I felt that day, by my sweet husband, and by all of our friends and family. Enjoy!

These are my people, the night before our wedding. We are insane, and we are insanely in love with each other.

It’s Your Wedding Day, Girl

I BARELY SLEPT. I was convinced I’d sleep like a rock because I was so tired and so emotional the night before, but NOPE NOPE NOPE. I laid there and laid there, drifting off, nearing sleep – but then would jerk awake, thinking, OH SHIT GOTTA DO THE THING and then I’d drift off and then OH SHIT THE OTHER THING. Over and over and over, all night.

I woke up completely, in the morning, to Mom whispering in my ear, Well, it’s kinda cold and rainy but it’s going to clear up.

Luckily, after at least a little bit of sleep, I was in a WAY better mood than I had been the night before. I think I just felt better about finally being able to do the work I had been anticipating for so long. For months, I had been planning this wedding, making lists, piling up decorations — and I couldn’t actually complete that tasks. It felt like it weighed over me, and we were going to be on a time crunch since we couldn’t decorate until the actual morning of the wedding. So once I was able to actually make progress, that went a long way to making me feel more prepared, less behind schedule.

The girls and I got up and puttered around, slowly waking up, eating some fruit and packing up the car. We went down to the winery and LORD HAVE MERCY, it was cold – no warmer than 50 degrees. All along, as we planned this wedding, as people said, well, wait if it rains? – I held to this sense of certainty that it would not rain. That no matter what, the weather would be fine by the time of the ceremony. I told Mom and the girls that morning, either it will clear up, which it WILL, or it won’t, and when it comes time that we HAVE to decide, we will. Until then – let’s plan on an outside ceremony.

Life Photography: Emily’s Bridal Shower

Listen, sometimes, it’s hard to keep all the Emilys in my life straight. Especially considering Travis and I have been friends since, hmm, kindergarten? Thereabouts, anyway — and he insisted on having a younger sister named Emily and marrying another Emily. Considering we have all been friends for several years now, and been in dance company shows together as well as been involved in each other’s weddings, we tend to spend big chunks of time together, in one room. Which means all three of us spend a lot of time all turning our heads in response to someone to someone calling Emily?

Last Saturday was one of those days — a bridal shower for Emily the Sister at the home of her longtime family friend. Emily the Sister I also call my Mini-Me, or auf Deutsch, Kleine Mich, since we both studied German and Dance at MSU together — she was just about two years behind me, on a very similar path.

So, this shower was beautiful and tasteful and complete with a giggling baby who kept everyone entertained. There was a Match the Love Song to the Disney Movie contest which I COMPLETELY DOMINATED, by the way. I walked in,saw it, and said, I’m gonna win that. And then I did. (No one is surprised.)

There were also Mad Libs, and a really incredible thing called Pickle Wraps (ham + cream cheese + pickles, sliced up) that I did not know existed prior to this day and am really glad I know about now. Several of the dance company girls from my last few years of dance company  made it in town, and we all got to reminisce about old shows, our favourite pieces, who’d been hurt that year, who’d been sick. Who had a wardrobe malfunction and who slipped on stage. You know, all the good stuff you don’t see sitting in the audience, and we giggle about back stage…

Only one more month until Emily and Richard tie the knot!
